Overview of Role:

The Farm Lead (Livestock) supports the Farm Operations leadeship in coordinating the daily operations of Bonton Farms’ livestock and crop production. This role assists in planning, organizing, and evaluating the day-to-day work of the farm team while ensuring the health and productivity of livestock and the efficiency of related farming activities.

The Farm Lead serves as a working leader, actively participating in hands-on farm labor while guiding team members, apprentices, and volunteers. This position helps ensure that Bonton Farms maintains high standards of sustainability, animal welfare, safety, and productivity in all areas of operation.

Key Responsibilities

Livestock Management (Primary Focus)
  • Lead and participate in the daily care, feeding, and monitoring of all livestock, including goats, pigs, chickens, cows, and other animals.
  •  Observe and report on animal health, behavior, and breeding cycles; coordinate with the Farm Manager on veterinary and preventive care schedules.
  • Maintain accurate livestock records, including births, treatments, and production logs.
  • Ensure pens, barns, and enclosures are clean, organized, and maintained to animal welfare standards.
  • Train and guide team members, apprentices, and volunteers in proper animal handling and safety procedures.
  • Support rotational grazing and feeding programs to ensure optimal animal health and soil sustainability.

Farm Operations & Production Support
  • Assist with planning and coordinating daily and seasonal farm activities including planting, harvesting, irrigation, and composting.
  • Support inventory management and coordinate ordering of feed, bedding, seed, and other farm supplies in collaboration with the Farm Operations Manager.
  •  Participate in farm infrastructure maintenance including fencing, irrigation systems, and equipment upkeep.
  • Assist with coordinating farm deliveries, product transport, and farm-to-enterprise logistics.
  • Support sustainable farming practices that prioritize soil health, efficient use of resources, and reduced waste.

Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Provide direction and daily work assignments for farm staff, apprentices, and volunteers under the guidance of the Farm Operations Manager.
  •  Help coordinate scheduling and ensure work activities are completed safely, on time, and to quality standards.
  •  Serve as a working mentor to apprentices, providing real-time coaching and accountability.
  •  Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams (Preservatory, Market Café, Coffeehouse, and People Development) to ensure aligned operations.

Administrative & Recordkeeping Support
  • Track and document farm practices, production data, and animal records.
  •  Assist in preparing daily or weekly operational summaries, including feed usage, yield data, and maintenance needs.
  •  Help monitor compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Support vendor and supplier coordination in the absence of the Farm Operations Manager.

Community Engagement & Education
  • Support volunteer activities and educational farm tours by sharing knowledge about livestock and sustainable farming practices.
  • Represent Bonton Farms with professionalism and alignment to its mission and values.
 
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of hands-on farm experience with a strong emphasis on livestock care and general farm operations.
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring a small team of farm staff or volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry, breeding, and feed management.
  • Familiarity with sustainable and regenerative farming methods preferred.
  •  Basic mechanical aptitude for operating and maintaining farm equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Must be comfortable performing physically demanding tasks and working alongside team members daily.
Compensation: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
